He was then 15 years and 9 months. Later, he broke his record for the World Swimming Championships in 2001 with the result of 1:54:58, earning her first international medal. 2002 brought Phelps participated in national competitions of the American Summer (US Summer Nationals). And a few more records: the new world record in the 400 meters and set records at the U.S. 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter mixed style. At the same competition next year, Phelps broke his own world record 400 meter mixed-style, passing them for 4:09.09. Shortly after graduating from high school in Towson (Baltimore suburb) in 2003, 17-year-old Michael Phelps set five world records, including the 200 m range at the World Championships in swimming in Barcelona with the time 1:56:04. Then, during the qualifying competitions for the Olympics 2004 he again broke his own world record in 400 meters range, going the distance for 4:08:41.

Phelps became a celebrity after the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where he earned 8 medals (6 of them gold). So he repeated the record of Russian gymnast Alexander Dityatin in the total number of medals received for one Olympics, set Dityatin in 1980 received a Gold for Phelps 100 m butterfly, 200 m butterfly, 200 m range, 4×200 freestyle and 4×100 complex, bronze – for the 200 m freestyle and 4×100 freestyle relay. He also set three Olympic records and one world. In 2004, Bob Bowman moved to Michigan, and Michael went with him. He enrolled at the University of Michigan at Department of “Sports Marketing and Management”, continuing to train under the guidance of his coach. In 2007, Phelps attended the World Championships in Melbourne, where he won 7 gold medals, setting five new world records.

In preparation for the 2008 Olympics, Phelps has set itself the task to beat the record of his compatriot Mark Spitz, who at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich, won 7 gold medals. At the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 Phelps became a sensation by winning 8 gold medals. He won the 400 meter medley, 200 m butterfly, 200 meter freestyle, 200 meter medley, 100-meter butterfly and 4×100 meter relays in freestyle, 4×100 and 4×200 complex-meter freestyle. In all except the swim 100m butterfly, Michael set world records. So he broke the record of his great predecessor and compatriot Mike Spitz Total gold, won in one Olympics. Having won 14 of his career Olympic gold-winning Michael Phelps became the award-winning athlete in the world. Phelps outside the pool is the same life as everybody else. He loves to play golf on your computer and Halo 3, watch tv, listen to hip-hop, there’s popcorn.
