NBA Defensive Player of the NBA The NBA Defensive Player Award of the Year (NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award) is given in the NBA since 1983. The winner is selected by a panel of 24 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each voting for first, second and third. Every election in the first square has 5 points, the second is 3 and the third 1. The player with the highest point total, despite the number of votes in the first position, wins. Since its inception it has won a total of 14 players. Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace are players who have been awarded more times, with 4 awards each, followed by Mark Eaton, Sidney Moncrief, Alonzo Mourning, Hakeem Olajuwon and Dennis Rodman, with two awards each. Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and Kevin Garnett are the only players to win the award and the MVP of the season over their careers Jordan and Olajuwon won both awards in the same season.
